Step 1: The Idea and the Brief
Every custom piece starts with a conversation. The clearer your brief, the closer the first design will be to what you imagined.
What to share
- A sketch, logo file or reference images, in the highest resolution you have.
- Exact spelling for any names or words, and the font you like.
- Approximate size, measured in millimeters or inches.
- Metal color and stone type: lab-grown diamond or moissanite, and any colored accents.
- How you plan to wear it: which chain, how often and for what occasions.
Why details matter now
Changing a design is easy on screen and very hard once metal has been cast. Time spent on the brief saves time and frustration later.
Step 2: CAD Design for Custom Hip Hop Jewelry
CAD stands for computer-aided design. A designer builds your piece as a precise 3D model, which is where your idea turns into something that can actually be made.
Building the shape
The designer traces your logo or letters, gives them depth, adds a solid back or open back, and positions the bail where it will let the pendant hang straight.
Mapping every stone
Each stone seat is placed in the model, sized and spaced so the surface looks fully covered without stones crowding each other. Thin lines in a logo may be thickened at this stage so they can hold stones.
Your approval
You typically see renders of the model from several angles. This is the moment to check spelling, proportions and size. Ask to see it next to a scale reference if you are unsure how big it will feel.
Step 3: From Digital Model to Solid Metal
Once the design is approved, it has to become real metal. The most common method is lost-wax casting, a technique jewelers have relied on for a very long time, now paired with modern 3D printing.
- Printing the model. The CAD file is 3D printed in a special wax or castable resin, producing an exact physical copy of your design.
- Building the mold. The printed model is attached to a wax stem and surrounded by a plaster-like material called investment, which hardens around it.
- Burning out. The mold is heated in a kiln. The wax or resin melts and burns away, leaving a hollow cavity in the exact shape of your piece.
- Pouring metal. Molten metal is poured or spun into the cavity, filling every detail.
- Breaking out. After cooling, the investment is broken away to reveal the raw casting.
Cleaning the casting
The raw piece is rough. The jeweler cuts off the stem, files away marks and pre-polishes surfaces so they are ready for stones.
Step 4: Hand Setting the Stones in Custom Hip Hop Jewelry
Setting is the most time-consuming and skilled part of the whole process. A large pendant can hold a great many small stones, and each one is placed and secured by hand.
Preparing each seat
The setter uses tiny drills and burs to shape each seat so the stone sits level and at the right height.
Securing the stones
For pavé work, small beads or prongs of metal are pushed over the edge of each stone. Larger stones may be held with claws or a bezel. The goal is a surface where stones are evenly spaced, level and firmly held.
Choosing the stones
Lab-grown diamonds, grown by HPHT or CVD, are real diamonds with a Mohs hardness of 10. Moissanite, at 9.25, offers stronger rainbow fire thanks to its dispersion of about 0.104. Both stand up well to the pressure of setting. Compare looks in our moissanite custom pendants.
Step 5: Polishing, Finishing and Final Checks
The final stage brings out the shine in both metal and stones.
Polishing
Exposed metal is polished in stages, from coarser compounds to fine ones, until it reflects like a mirror. Some areas may be given a matte or textured finish for contrast.
Plating, if chosen
Silver pieces may be plated with gold or rhodium to give the color you selected. Plating is applied after setting and polishing so it covers evenly.
Cleaning and inspection
The piece is cleaned to remove polishing residue, then checked for loose stones, sharp edges, bail strength and overall finish before it is packed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is CAD in jewelry making?
CAD is computer-aided design, a way of building a precise 3D model of your piece before it is made, so you can review it first.
Why does custom jewelry take longer than stock pieces?
Custom work adds design, approval and hand setting of many stones. Each step takes time to do properly.
Can I make changes after approving the design?
Changes are easy before casting and very difficult after. Review renders carefully before you approve.
What is lost-wax casting?
It is a method where a wax or resin model is encased in a mold and melted out, leaving a cavity that is filled with molten metal.
